Why is bone density important? Bone density evaluation helps determine a person’s risk for developing osteoporosis – a condition that causes the bones to become fragile and break – most often in older women, but not always.
The Breast Diagnostic Center provides bone densitometry, which is a simple test that uses very low-dose dual energy x-ray beams (DEXA scan). The test measures bone mineral density and assesses osteoporosis and bone fracture risk. In addition, Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) analysis can be performed to help determine your 10-year probability of risk for fracture. This includes the potential for hip fracture and major osteoporotic fractures such as spine, forearm, hip, and shoulder.
The test itself is very easy and painless. Including the medical history evaluation, the process takes about 30 minutes.
