Michele Dissinger of WHMC Named the Recipient of 2012 HCA Innovator Award in Quality and Patient Safety
Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) announced that Michele Dissinger of West Houston Medical Center (WHMC) is the recipient of the 2012 HCA Innovator Award in the Quality and Patient Safety category. This company-wide employee recognition program was designed to distinguish non-management individuals whose innovative ideas to improve quality, service, or the efficiency of operations, have been put into action and proven effective. The HCA Innovators Award helps connect employees to the greater organization and rewards them for their ideas. Awards are given out at the facility, division and corporate levels in each of the three categories: service excellence, quality and patient safety, and financial impact.
Dissinger, Manager of Emergency Services at WHMC, designed a pediatric crash cart that would facilitate the needs of younger patients whose needs were difficult to meet with the existing adult cart. Dissinger’s system is stocked with equipment pediatric clinicians were familiar with and the cart is painted bubble gum pink to differentiate it from the adult cart.
“The staff response was great, the physician’s response was great and the organization of our pediatric codes improved tremendously,” said Dissinger. “Implementation of the new cart also saved thousands of dollars as staff previously discarded equipment from the old system during emergency situations because it did not impact the pediatric code.”
WHMC is now home to three pink pediatric crash carts.
“I believe we have had a great impact in caring for our littlest patients by improving their outcomes using equipment the staff knows, is comfortable with, and can access with ease,” said Dissinger.
For her innovation, HCA rewarded Dissinger with the corporate level Innovator Award in the quality and patient safety category. The quality and patient safety award is judged based on the following criteria: positively affects clinical outcomes, facilitates public recognition for quality/performance, improves use of clinical resources, automates a manual process and reduces employee health issues. In addition to a “Tommy” award featuring the likeliness of HCA co-found Dr. Thomas F. “Tommy” Frist Jr., a widely recognized great innovator in healthcare, business and philanthropy; Dissinger was rewarded with a financial stipend of $10,000.
